An experienced electrical engineer with a broad range of instrumentation, control valves, PLC and DCS controls, low/medium/high voltage power distribution, motors (induction, synchronous, DC), drives, electrical and instrumentation technician supervision, multiple discipline contractor supervision, and capital project management. He is a BSEE whose experience ranges from junior process controls engineer to senior electrical engineer, electrical superintendent, capital projects manager, and senior power electrical engineer.
His experience spans several industries from particleboard manufacturing, recycle gypsum wallboard paper, virgin kraft paper, and refined petroleum transportation, I’ve led programs to develop electrical and instrumentation technicians safety, technical knowledge, and management maturity. As a project manager, he has managed low, medium, and high voltage power distribution, electrical & instrumentation, and process control projects for projects ranging from $100K to $5M.
As a senior power electrical engineer, he has managed multiple 138kV substation upgrade projects, led engineering efforts on a multi-year arc flash mitigation project, and led electrical engineering and construction efforts on a $140M facility upgrade project. • Electrical Engineer responsible for the reliability and electrical capital projects in Utilities, Pulp Mill, and Paper Machine areas at the Linerboard paper mill.
• Recent projects include the replacement of 500hp and 300hp DC motors on a bi-nip press with Rockwell PowerFlex755 variable frequency drives and AC induction motors, replacement of 8 5kV power distribution breakers, installation of 5kV isolation switch, upgrade of 250hp pump motor and Rockwell PowerFlex700 variable frequency drive, upgrade of 15kV power distribution breaker relay, upgrade of recovery boiler precipitator rapper controls, and installation of recovery boiler precipitator Transformer/Rectifier control monitoring system.
• Charges include motor reliability improvement, upgrade of legacy DC drive systems, upgrade of legacy PLC and DCS platforms, the introduction of wireless instrumentation systems, instrumentation standardization, stores parts consolidation, parts repair programs, E&I technician training, and process troubleshooting.
• As the Fibers Area Electrical and Instrumentation Supervisor, I act as an E&I technician direct supervisor, planner, technical resource, and an agent of change in a ~50-year-old integrated mill.
• My areas of responsibility entail the pulp mill (15 batch digesters, 3 drum washer lines), the woodyard (2 Letourneau JC40 cranes, 2 Letourneau log stackers, barking drum, chipper, etc.), effluent area (activated sludge basin, 4 aerator ponds, heavy liquor pond, ash pond), and lime kilns (2 lime kilns, mud washers, mud storage, slakers, causticizers, etc.).
• Management of electrical and instrumentation technician group consisting of 9 E&I technicians, 1 IT/Controls engineer, and 1 QCS engineer.
• Area responsibilities include 15kV, 5kV, 600V, 277V, 208V, 110V, 24VDC power distribution, PLCs, DCS, instrumentation, control valves, hydraulic systems, and pneumatic systems.
• Maintenance downtime reduced from ~8% to 4% during tenure as electrical engineer due to non-capital expenditure projects (logic stream-lining, instrumentation/control valve standardization, E&I technician training).
